Here’s my latest in a series of 17 short videos I’ve produced for the Camino Real Playhouse. It’s a promotional video for the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical South Pacific.

  1. Hello David,
Thanks for the video. I can’t imagine the challenges that are beyond your control…audio, lighting and location. Some nice touches in the clip, like the flyout sidebar for buying tickets and show dates. With all that varying stage light what WB works or does it take a lot of post to bring it in? Looks like you are shooting with a mirrorless?? I am looking at the Lumix G4.

      Hi Larry,
Yes, there are lots of parameters outside my control when shooting a live play. YouTube provides the options (annotations and cards) for the flyout sidebar.

I’m using the GH4 and have been very happy with it. It has its limitations but, overall, it’s a great value for video work. If you’re considering the GH4, I’d recommend Dave Dugdale’s excellent review. He also has a mini-course on using the GH4 which I bought and found very valuable.

Believe it or not, I use automatic white balance when shooting at the playhouse. With the lighting in a play like South Pacific it would be impossible to set an accurate white balance. As you could see, the colors change drastically from scene to scene. I’ve found that the GH4’s AWB comes reasonably close to showing what the scene actually looked like under the varying stage lights. By the way, I was shooting at ISO 2500.
      Dave
